miniADSB - Tutorial

(Updated: 20 SEP 2013)

This tutorial will explain the steps that are required to complete the miniADSB kit.

The most critical step during assembly of the miniADSB kit is the placement of the BGM1013 LNA and its sorrounding capacitors and coils. Please follow the below instructions for this section extremely careful. Most failures of a successful assembly occur because the LNA oscillates due to problems in this area.

To assemble the kit you need:
- a SMD soldering iron (fine tip)
- a standard soldering iron (wide tip), minimum 50 Watts
- a pair of tweezers
- good thin solder from good old SnPb
- good and bright light, maybe combined with a magnifier or a microscope
- a variable DC power supply, 3 to 5V
- one or two multimeters
- an oscilloscope

When soldering on the big ground pads or the groundplane a SMD soldering tip is too weak.
Therefore an additional standard tip is a must.

You may want to print the PCB layout and Schematics for reference.
Click onto the images below and a new window will open them in full size.

This is how the kit comes to you:
So sieht der Bausatz aus:

IMPORTANT - When testing:
SAW filters are specified with an absolute maximum input DC value of ZERO Volts. Therefore do not use an Ohmmeter to check connections.

Secure your PCB in a safe place. And have a last look onto its clean and nice surface.
PCB
To test carefully position the AD8313 (=1JA) to its place Pin 1 mark is lower left corner.

It is important that the right position is applied, so no pin is in contact with the ground pad that runs below the chip.

U200 (AD8313)
To solder the AD8313 start with one empty corner pad that you solder, then place the chip over that pad and solder the first pin so it cannot move. Then solder the remaining pins.

When soldering the first pin it is important that the chip cannot be "sucked" away by the soldering iron, therefore hold it firm with the tweezers or your finger.

Should the chip suck to your soldering iron immediately remove it in order to avoid heat damage.

Solder the 53.6 Ohms resistor across the AD8313 inputs
(here a 51 Ohms resistor is used = "510", the kit has a 52R3)

Use the same techniques and first solder one pad, the solder the resistor to this pad, then let the other pad/pin follow.

R200 (53,6 Ohms, may be between 51 and 56 Ohms)
Place the two 10 Ohms resistors (="100") into the VCC linesNun zwei Widerstände mit jeweils 10 Ohm ("100") in der VCC-Leitung platzieren.
R201, R202 (10 Ohms)
Solder one 4k7 (="472") resistor across the AD8313 output and provide a VCC (red) and a GND (black) wire. It is good practice to put a diode as 1N4001 into the red VCC line to protect from reverse supply.

Also place two 100nF capacitors from VCC to GND as for now (no markings). There are provisions for two more capacitors right/left from the 100nF capacitors. These can be filled by 1nF capacitors later.

C200, C205 (100 nF)

C201, C204 (1nF) may be applied later
Solder a (blue here) wire to the AD8313 output.

Also solder another 4k7 Ohms (="472") resistor to the output line to protect against short circuits during testing. This can be replaced by 0 Ohms later.

The third 4k7 Ohms resistor is an optional pullup resistor for the AD8313 output. It is left out here and can be added later (above the right red arrow - it is shown as 5k6 in the schematics).

Now: also check the PCB backside for short circuits from the wires to the groundplane.

R203, R205 (4k7 Ohms)
Now set your power supply VCC to around 4.0V and connect it to the black (GND) and red (VCC) wires.

Connect your Voltmeter to the blue wire on the AD8313 output.
A voltage of around 0.63 V should be indicated. This shows: there is almost nothing on the AD8313 input.

When varying VCC (DO NOT EXCEED 5V) the 0.63V should stay almost unchanged.

Measure the voltage on either side of the 53.6 Ohms resistor. It should be around 1V less than your VCC.

You should also check the current in the red VCC line, this shall be around 13mA.

Dont bother for too precise values, all numbers a rough.

Check voltage on R200 either side = 3.0V ca.
If you have an oscilloscope available and a wireless LAN access point in your close vicinity you may want to do the following check: when connecting the oscilloscope to the output (blue wire) you can see a short pulse every 10 ms. This is a WLAN beacon transmission that strays directly into the Logamp and is amplified and rectified.

Check for presence of WLAN beacon (optional)
Now the tough part.
Jetzt wird es schwierig

We need to solder the TA0232A. This filter has very small soldering pads on its sides that are a bit hidden. You need a fine solder tip. I do solder the pins of the filter first so they can better contact and accept the later soldering. Then I place the filter and "push" the solder towards each individual pin.

With the fine solder tip it is impossible to solder on the big ground pads because there is not enough heat. Dont try! Therefore you must use a thicker tip for these pins.

Be sure the filter is correctly aligned so the pads cannot touch the ground pad under the device.

There is no way to check the soldering quality by electrical means. Do not use an Ohmmeter! The absolute limit for the filter on all pins for DC = ZERO Volts! Do a visual check and use a magnifier and a good lamp instead.

(The picture looks worse than it is in reality!)

U104 (TA0232A)
Now add two 10 pF capacitors to the signal lines.

At this point it is good practice to re-check the current consumption of 13 mA. If you measure another value, something is wrong.

C202, C203 (10 pF)
Next is the very small LNA. These devices are extremely sensitive to static discharge and heat, so handle with extreme care. Because they are so small they cannot dissipate too much heat. Soldering must only take place one second or so. Then wait some time for the next soldering action. ONLY USE A FINE SMD TIP.

When soldering the chip tend to stick to the soldering iron, so they need to be firmly fixed by tweezers or your finger! If sticking occurs the chip will usually be damaged by heat. Please take this serious. I have scrapped a few LNAs due to my fault.

Before continuing it is important to assess which chip you have:

CHIPS MARKED "C4-"
Be sure to place the chip to the correct position, there is a ground pad below it! The chips marking is "head over" to pin 1! When you read the marking "C4-" pin 1 is in the UPPER RIGHT CORNER!

CHIPS MARKED "C4t"
Be sure to place the chip to the correct position, there is a ground pad below it! When you read the marking "C4t" pin 1 is in the LOWER LEFT CORNER!

IMPORTANT: for positioning the chip the markingcode ist not relevant. What is relevant is the small circle pad at Pin 1!

I usually solder them with the same technique as everything else: solder a corner pad, then place the chip and solder this one corner pin. Then the chip is firm in its position and the remaining pins can be soldered.

If your efforts have failed, there is one spare LNA in the kit.

Position as shown on the photo
Position wie auf dem Photo gezeigt
U102 (BGM1013)
This is about how it looks when the LNA is completely applied.

Now the coil (68 or 82 nH, no marking) needs to be soldered. The pads are almost "below" the device, so careful soldering and visual inspection is needed.

Place the coil as close as possible towards the LNA to avoid oscillations.

L100 (68 or 82 nH)
The VCC line can now be extended to the LNA. I have used a gray cable for the short bridge from the red VCC cable. You may want to use another diode as 1N4001.

The voltage drop between the logamp and the amplifier section is not an issue, you can operate them fully separate as they are isolated by the second SAW filter.

Also the 39 pF capacitor in the dataline can now be added.

C103 (39pF)
Finally we will add a 22nF (left) and 1nF (right) close to the LNA. There is another provision North of these SMDs, this can be used for a 100 nF decoupling capacitor if so needed. Place the 22nF cap as close as possible towards the LNA to avoid oscillations.

Important alternative:
This area is most critical with regard to wild oscillations of the LNA. To reduce this possibility the two blocking capacitors can also be soldered to to gtound plane of the other side (as in the image to the right). Also a ground bridge as shown is helpful (big drop of solder) (Thanks, Günter for this hint)

We are now ready to test the current consumption. Be sure you apply 4.0V (measured after the current measuring meter at the LNA VCC line!). The total current of the PCB should be 30 mA +- 2mA. If there is more current drawn, something is wrong and the LNA may oscillate. If oscillation occurs all parts around the LNA should be carefully resoldered after the PCB was clean from any surplus solder.

The PCB output voltage (blue wire) may be much higher now, depending on your RF noise environment. I have measured around 0.75V, but higher values up to 2V (saturation) are possible.

Important alternative, in case of oscillations:

C103 (22nF) and C105 (1nF)

C107 (100 nF) may be added later
Additional hints, if the LNA oscillates (high or fluctuating current consumption):

"I did the following.
I remove the two capacitors 22nF and 1nF and two extra capacitors.
Remove the extra solder from the pcb using Desoldering wire.
Install 2 new capasitors the first 22nF so close (1 side of capasitor "touch" one side of LNA"
and the second capasitor 1nF "touch" one side of 22nF
Now Run for one day without problem and the current is always 30ma."

New Cell
We will now add the TA1090 filter. This is a bit easier to solder than the TA0232, but the same technique should apply.

Be sure you position the device correctly. It has the same orientation as the TA0232, i.e. the marking can be read up right on the photo.
On the picture the filter is a bit out of line, this created a short circuit with the ground pad below and I had to correct that.

(Note: pin 1 of the TA1090 is marked by a circled T. Pin 1 must be in the lower left corner on the picture)

to BGM1013

to BNC connector
U101 (TA1090EC)
We can now add the two missing 39 pF capacitors in the data line and finally the BNC connector shall be soldered to the PCB, if this option is selected. Please refer to below for options on placing the connector as the case is mispunched.

Very important: A ESD surpressor resistor of 1 to 10k shall be added between the dataline before C101 and ground to prevent damage due to static loads This resistor is part of all newer kits..

C101 (39 pF) and C102 (39 pF)

X1 (UG1094W1)

Z1 ESD protection (1...10k)
Dont forget to solder the connector on the backside of the PCB and check all connections before power will be applied.

After a final visual check we can now apply power again (4.0V) and measure
- a current of ca. 30 mA
- an average output voltage of ca. 0.75V (depending on your RF noise environment)
If there is more than 0.75V present on the output you may want to shield the PCB.

Now we are ready to assemble the PCB into the screening case.

Cases for the Option 1 UG1094/W1 were punched the wrong way. Therefore the PCB must be assembled overhead.
Photos dont show the top cover of the case.

Option 1 (UG1094/W1 - Connector soldered to PCB)
There is a hole on the opposite side to let out cables.

Alternative Option 1 (connector soldered overhead to PCB so that parts can still be accessed)

Options 2 BNC UG1094U connector case-mount - the bottom case needs to widened a little
There is no hole on the opposite side to let cables out, thios needs to be added

Option 3 SMA connector case-mount - you need to drill holes to mount the connector
With this option you are flexible, but on your own with drilling. You will
receive a BNC UG1094U case as in Option 2.
